How Does a Dental Cleaning Procedure Work?

During a regular examination, our veterinarians will thoroughly examine your pet's teeth and gums. Based on the overall health of your pet’s mouth our veterinarians can recommend the best course of action.  We can also show you how to initiate a program of home tooth brushing to supplement any in-clinic procedures and lengthen the time between dental cleanings.

Once the appropriate course of action is determined, we may recommend a prophy cleaning.  This is an anesthetic procedure, as our cleaning process uses ultrasonic scaling to actually clean built-up plaque from below the gum line.  We use the safest and most conservative anesthetic protocols, taking every precaution to ensure your pet has a safe and smooth dental cleaning.  During the procedure, we remove years of accumulated plaque and calculus, then closely examine your pet’s mouth for any signs of disease or decay.  Frequently, this is the only time we are able to get a sustained look at the recesses of your pet’s mouth and gums and identify problem areas that are in need of treatment.
